The Spirit of '76- -the Youth of '76- -How wonderful it .
be if we could achieve and experience the spirit, the drive,
the pride, the dignity of man's worth that created the spirit
and gave birth to our nation in 1776.

Our nation is still in a state of growth and self-actualiza-
tion--a nation struggling to find itself; a nation working to
fit all the pieces --the trials, the struggles, the successes,
the failures --of the past and present into one true unified
whole.

Like our nation, we, the youth of 76, are still growing.
Each of us must engage in his/her own private struggle if
we are to reach the maturity and the self -actualization that
must be our goal. We m u s t live and go out into the w o r 1 d
imbued with a spirit like the one which moved the colonists
in 1776.

Although we in 1976 march to a different drummer, we, too,
have to fit together the pieces of our own past and present --
the knowledge, the values, the sorrows, the joys, the trials,
the errors, the defeats and the successes --into aunified,
freedom -loving, self-respecting whole.

The ideal condition

Would be, I admit, that men should be

right by instinct.
But since we are all likely to go astray
The reasonable thing is to learn from

those who can teach. — Sophocles —

What can we say about a man who gave all he had to give? Pat D. 's dedi-
cation to the youth of our school community was complete --his contri-
bution immeasurable. No words can ever express the deep grief we at
K. P. H. feel at the loss of someone more than a school committee mem-
ber, at the loss of our friend.

IN

MEMORIAM

Our senior year. . . How much do we know? It
would be rediculous to say that what we have
learned could be put down on paper or tested.
It is in us in the form of experiences --experi-
encing new ideas, successes and failures, love
and friendships --over every second of the
past four years.

In the future, we will all live new ex-
periences and take on added re-
sponsibilities. But however
broad our horizons may be-
come, King Philip will
have been our foun-
dation for life.

William E. Grant
7/28/58 - 8/19/75

In the 1976 Edition of the Chieftain, we express our regret for
the loss of a fine student, Billy Grant. His efforts in the auto-
motive department of our school had proven to be substantial,
and his work at the Wrentham State School will always be ap-
preciated. The loss of one of K. P. 's finest students will be
felt for many years.

107

As the winged seeds of the dandilion grow together
to make a beautiful complexity,
So each of us grows and contributes to the commu-
nity that is King Philip High School.

Eventually, the individuals, carried by the winds
of chance, go out on their own to begin new lives.

Our time together is ending,

We have out -grown our limited surroundings.

Soon we must separate and begin new more indepen-

dant lives.

On this final page of the 1976 Chieftain we would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs.
Alice E. Church, our advisor. For more than ten years Mrs. Church has worked to
make our Chieftain an award-winning publication.

No one could ever measure what she has done for us --not only in terms of physical ac-
complishments, but in day-to-day living. She gave of herself freely, to anyone with a
need for it, without expecting anything in return. We came to her with our problems,
knowing that someone would listen to us, never afraid of being turned away because she
was "too busy. "

The task of producing a yearbook is not a little thing, as anyone who has ever worked on
the yearbook knows. Mrs. Church's first concern was always with the quality of the book
we were creating. She was a perfectionist, she strived for the best, and she brought out
the same qualities in everyone she worked with. Without her, we could never have pro-
duced this yearbook. We could never say thank you enough times or explain our appre-
ciation; for truly, who can measure the value of a friend? We so dedicate this book. . .
to a friend.
